Maksim Grinberg and His Dedication to Housing Equity in New York City

Housing is, in Maksim Grinberg’s view, the foundational social issue of New York City. Without stable, affordable housing, all other efforts to improve well-being — education, health, employment, community connection — become far more difficult. As New York continues to grapple with a historic affordability crisis, Grinberg has directed attention and support toward organizations doing essential work to keep vulnerable New Yorkers housed and protected.

Coalition for the Homeless is one of New York City’s most prominent advocates for people experiencing homelessness, providing direct services and fighting for policy changes that address the root causes of the crisis. Grinberg respects the organization’s dual focus on immediate relief and long-term systemic change — an approach he believes is essential to making lasting progress.

Grinberg has also acknowledged the critical work of Urban Homesteading Assistance Board (UHAB), which helps low-income tenants preserve and own their homes through cooperative housing models. For Grinberg, homeownership and housing stability are pathways to intergenerational wealth and community resilience.

He has also observed the impactful work of Pratt Center for Community Development, which advocates for equitable land use and community-centered planning across the five boroughs. For Grinberg, ensuring that communities have a voice in shaping their own neighborhoods is as important as any direct housing intervention.

Maksim Grinberg believes that a city where working families cannot afford to live is a city that is failing its own promise. His support for housing equity organizations reflects a conviction that philanthropy must engage directly with the conditions that shape life outcomes — and in New York, few conditions are more determinative than where you live and whether that place is secure.
